Hi!

Nice to meet you, I'm Ruth

I'm a Girl Scout, and this website is a part of my Gold Award. The Gold Award is like the Eagle Scout rank for Boy Scouts, only it's generally less well-known. But I don't believe it's any less impressive, so here's some more information!

A Gold Award is:

  • the highest award a Girl Scout can earn

  • at least 80 hours of effort

  • long lasting and impactful for a community

  • led by the Scout and team of choice

  • about anything that the Scout finds interesting!

My project is teaching the community about Ohio's native pollinators and ways to protect them. Keep reading for more details

I was interested in an environmental themed project, so I researched current problems facing ecosystems and read about the pollinator decline. I knew pollinators played a big role in the environment, and I started brainstorming ideas for this theme. While I was familiar with butterfly gardens, I tried thinking of more personal, unique ideas that I could implement. I especially wanted it to be fun for everyone involved.

I finally decided on a project teaching the community about pollinators. While the project would focus on Ohio pollinators, I also wanted to put focus on the global importance of pollinators. After much brainstorming, my favorite format for sharing this information ended up being a public event.

From there, it was a lot of planning and research. While researching, I kept wishing I could include all the cool species I read about, but there were just too many! I picked a location, times, and dates. I prepared materials for crafts and stations. I, of course, had lots of help from my advisors, troop leaders, friends, and mom. Along the way, there were countless changes to my original plan, but I'm glad for each of them, and this project as a whole. I've learned so much not only about native pollinators, but also about leadership and organization.

P. S. One of my favorite parts of making this website is designing the pollinator crafts. I went through many ideas before settling on my (hopefully) best ones. I hope you give them a try!
